Lagrangian and branch-and-cut approaches for upgrading spanning tree problems

چکیده
Problems aiming at finding budget constrained optimal upgrading schemes to improve network performance have received attention over the last two decades. In their general setting, these problems consist of designing a network and, simultaneously, allocating (limited) upgrading resources in order to enhance the performance of the designed network. In this paper we address two particular optimal upgrading network design problems; in both cases, the sought layout corresponds to a spanning tree of the input network and upgrading decisions can be taken on nodes. We design Mixed Integer Programming-based algorithmic schemes to solve the considered problems: Lagrangian relaxation approaches and branch-andcut algorithms. Along with the designed algorithms, different enhancements, including valid inequalities, primal heuristic and variable fixing procedures, are proposed. Using two set of instances, we experimentally compare the designed algorithms and explore the benefits of the devised enhancements. The results show that the proposed approaches are effective for solving to optimality most of the instances in the testbed, or manage to obtain solutions and bounds giving very small optimality gaps. Besides, the proposed enhancements turn out to be beneficial for improving the performance of the algorithms.

A Hybrid Relax-and-Cut/Branch and Cut Algorithm for the Degree-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree Problem
A new exact solution algorithm is proposed for the Degree-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree Problem. The algorithm involves two combined phases. The first one contains a Lagrangian Relaxand-Cut procedure while the second implements a Branch-and-Cut algorithm. Both phases rely on a standard formulation for the problem, reinforced with Blossom Inequalities. An important feature of the proposed al...
متن کاملSOLVING A STEP FIXED CHARGE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM BY A SPANNING TREE-BASED MEMETIC ALGORITHM
In this paper, we consider the step fixed-charge transportation problem (FCTP) in which a step fixed cost, sometimes called a setup cost, is incurred if another related variable assumes a nonzero value. In order to solve the problem, two metaheuristic, a spanning tree-based genetic algorithm (GA) and a spanning tree-based memetic algorithm (MA), are developed for this NP-hard problem. For compa...
متن کاملPolyhedral results, branch-and-cut and Lagrangian relaxation algorithms for the adjacent only quadratic minimum spanning tree problem
Given a complete and undirected graph G, the Adjacent Only Minimum Spanning Tree Problem (AQMSTP) consists of finding a spanning tree that minimizes a quadratic function of its adjacent edges. The strongest AQMSTP linear integer programming formulation in the literature works in an extended variable space, using exponentially many decision variables assigned to the stars of G. In this paper, we...
متن کاملFormulations and exact solution approaches for the degree preserving spanning tree problem
Given a connected and undirected graph G, the degree preserving spanning tree problem (DPSTP) asks for a spanning tree of G with the maximum number of vertices with the same degree in the tree and in G. These are called full degree vertices. We introduce integer programming formulations, valid inequalities and four exact solution approaches based on different formulations. Two branch-and-bound ...
